Heljä-Tuulia Pihamaa appointed Deputy Data Protection Ombudsman
The Government has today appointed Heljä-Tuulia Pihamaa, LLM, to the office of Deputy Data Protection Ombudsman for a term of five years beginning on 22 March. As Deputy Data Protection Ombudsman, Pihamaa will primarily be responsible for questions of data protection in the public sector and data protection issues handled at the national level. She will also head one of the customer service teams at the Office of the Data Protection Ombudsman.
The Deputy Data Protection Ombudsman is responsible for decisions and inspections in her own field, and for cooperation with stakeholders. The Deputy Data Protection Ombudsman is also a member of the Office of the Data Protection Ombudsman’s sanctions board. The board is responsible for imposing administrative fines under the GDPR.
Heljä-Tuulia Pihamaa is currently the S-Group's Data Protection Officer, responsible for the SOK Corporation and its subsidiaries and 19 regional cooperatives. Before that, Pihamaa served as the S-Bank's Data Protection Officer and Head of Office and Senior Officer at the Office of the Data Protection Ombudsman. Pihamaa's duties as Head of Office at the Office of the Data Protection Ombudsman included deputising for the Data Protection Ombudsman, supervisory duties, and tasks related to decision-making and general governance.
There were 13 applicants for the post of Deputy Data Protection Ombudsman.
